What we do

Challenge

The Borkum Riffgrund 2 Offshore Wind Farm is located in the North Sea, within the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), approximately 34 km north of Borkum Island. The project site is directly adjacent to the wind farms Borkum Riffgrund 01, Alpha Ventus, Merkur and Trianel Windpark Borkum within water depths ranging from 27 m to 33 m. Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm includes 56, GE MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbines representing 450 MW. These are erected on 20 suction bucket jackets and 36 monopile & transition piece (MP/TP) foundations.

Solution

DEME's scope comprised the storage, transportation and installation of the 20 suction bucket jacket foundations. These were fabricated at ST3, Poland (Jackets) and Harland & Wolff, Northern Ireland (buckets) and were assembled in Cuxhaven, Germany.

Our HLJV ‘Innovation’ loaded the 950 tonnes suction bucket jackets in the port of Cuxhaven, Germany. We installed the foundations offshore by using suction technology with the buckets forced into the seabed to their target depth, ensuring the permanent stability of the structure.
