What we do

Challenge

TKCSA is a joint venture between the German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp Steel and the Brazilian Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), the leading diversified mining company in the Americas and the largest producer of iron ore and pellets in the world.

TKCSA wanted to construct and operate a steel plant for the production of high quality steel slabs with a capacity of approximately 5 million tonnes per year, together with port facilities for loading the slabs and discharging raw materials. The chosen site was located near Sepetiba in Santa Cruz, 80 km from the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A tender was issued for the required port access channel and harbour basin dredging and reclamation works.

Solution

DEME was awarded the entire contract, which comprised both dredging the harbour basin and access channel and the reclamation of the land on which the new steel plant would be constructed.  We performed all of the works under strict health, safety and environmental conditions.

Major equipment included the large cutter suction dredger, the “Vlaanderen XIX” for works that involved the removal of 11 million m³ of materials. In addition to earthmoving equipment, we deployed an environmental mechanical dredge system and an environmental cutter suction dredger to enable us to fulfil the strict requirements.

Due to the sheer scale of the reclamation area, three large booster stations, 1 km of floating line, 6.5 km of sinker line and around 11 km of shore lines were used for bridging the distances between the outer ends of the access channel and the reclamation site.
